About the Ceramics

The glaze & underglaze are entirely food-safe and the stoneware clay is high fired creating a vitreous (glasslike & non-porous) body, which means that the clay body itself is food-safe even unglazed. It also means that it is very durable & highly chip resistant. The porcelaineous stoneware body produces a clear, bright white & wonderfully bright colours.

The ceramics are suitable for the microwave, dishwasher & freezer but cannot be used for cooking. They can be put in a warm oven (150-200° F) but, to be safe, should be put in a cold oven before warming starts. Any sudden changes of temperature should be avoided as this may cause cracking.

All the designs stand out as sophisticated, bright and modern, yet distinctly rooted in African tradition. Each lively piece is entirely hand painted with underglaze paints and signed by the artist Mfuneko Dingiswayo - winner of several awards for his eye-catching designs. Since each piece is produced by hand, no two pieces are identical and there are wonderful small variations in colour and design, which is characteristic of any piece of art.

Because our ceramics are not mass-produced and come from so far away, we may have limited stock of some items. We do try to stock many matching pieces, however, everything is designed to be "mix & match".

About Us

Our functional award winning art pottery is imported directly from South Africa from a fair trade, co-operative pottery. Each piece is labour intensive & not mass-produced the way most tableware is today.

Africa Ceramica Plus is proud to represent a pottery where profit is returned directly to the artists to help them and their families in their struggle against AIDS and poverty. (More in About the Pottery)

Here at Africa Ceramica Plus it is our belief that worldwide, education and greater prosperity allow people to live with dignity and hope which leads to safer, more stable countries and thereby a safer world for all of us. With this in mind, we will not sell products that come from exploitive sources.

About The Pottery Studio

The Pottery's goal is to create high quality ceramics and provide their staff of women and men with good housing, medical care and AIDS drugs, good training and education.

Started as a small home business, the Pottery has grown to include the award winning artist Mfuneko Dingiswayo, and has moved into larger premises at an old dairy.
Pottery Studio Staff

In South Africa, 1 in 5 is HIV positive. The Pottery started an AIDS education and counseling program and HIV testing for all, sadly showing that they were part of the African statistic. (For more information on AIDS in Africa & world wide click here).

Many of the artisans live in poor conditions, support several unemployed family members and consequently, suffer from malnutrition. The Pottery is helping to build their staff good housing. They also provide healthy daily meals for all, plus immuno-boosting vitamins for the HIV patients.

So far, the Pottery is sponsoring the education of 2 of an employee's children at a local private school, where they are in a class of 18 (instead of a class of 50 at a local squatter camp school).

Public transport in South Africa is very poor so the Pottery teaches their staff to drive and provides a car to transport fellow workers.

The Pottery has become a very strong, happy and supportive team. It has a wonderful work environment and staff who are passionate about their work. By purchasing these products you are helping them to supply their HIV positive staff with anti-retrovirals and build more houses.

Thank you for your support.
